Sunday night I watched a documentary on HBO2 called "Thinking XXX". This documentary had intervies with XXX stars as well as producers, photographers and others. The most interesting aspect, I thought, was the fact that women make more (alot more) than men in porn, including men in gay more, who make considerably more than straight men porn.

I think this is great for them. It didi make me think about something my father and I discussed recently (non-porn related!) He was giving me statistics on how much more men make than women who have the same job. He has alsways been a strong womens rights advocates, he had 3 daughters so it was inevitable. Women and men who are both doctors, lawyers, dentists, construction workers and have the same level of education or training can make very different wages. This was even worse years ago he said, but still so today. I graduate in May and this was part of his pep talk to get me to go to graduate school right away.

Prostitution is sometimes referred to as the oldest profession around. Why is it that women can make more money that men using their bodies, not brains? This creates the stage for the double standards. When a woman who is attractive gets a promotion or is hired the talk around the water coller often involves that notion that she may have used her body and not brains.

What does this say about our society that almost the only industry where women will make more than a man with the same level of experience or education as her is an industry where she has to use her body.

Porn Myth #5 Opposite Argument

It is very true than men and people in general enjoy variety in every aspect of life. Any outlet that allows this without the fear of reprecussions is a blessing to society. A man may have fallen in love with a brunette woman and married her and have a family but secretly he has always had a thing for redheads. He would not want to hurt his wifes feelings and make her feel as if he no longer loves her by asking her to dye her hair red, or worse freak her out altogether by bringing home a red wig and asking her to wear it during sex. Porn gives him an outlet to have his cake and eat it too without ever cheating on his wife or making her fell self-conscious and less attractive to him.

Porn also allows men to enjoy the viewing of many different types of sexual acts, some of which their wives and girlfriends may not be comfortable in real life. For years there have been men who have soliceted their wives and girlfriends to have three-somes. The 1999 movie "Sex Monster" starring Muriel hemingway and Mike Binder takes an interesting twist on this subject. In this movie Marty (Mike Binder) convinces his wife Laura (Muriel Hemingway) to have a three-some. Laura loves it so much that she even has her own escapades with women alone while Marty is at work with many women including Marty's bosses wife. If Marty had just viewed porn of threesome instead of trying them, like many men, his relationship would be safe and in tact.

That is just one of the many reasons how viewing porn can be healthy for relationships and let men have thier fantasies without disrupting thier relationships.

On the slide towards violence

In lecture 19 Professor Halavais brought up the question of whether Brian McCutchen had been “sliding toward violence” since he (Brian) had been kicked out a library more than once for viewing porn prior to raping and strangling an 8 year old girl.

All the facts here show a direct connection between violence and porn which must have the Catholic Diocese and many other religious organizations pointing fingers and saying “I told you so!” My question is exactly what kind of porn was Brian McCutchen viewing?

If the answer is child porn then yes, it is a shame it wasn’t caught and reported. But there are many people who view the porn involving consentual adults and have no violent or homocidal tendancies. I would argue that they also would probobly never be found in a public library so that would have been the first red light!

I think that there is nothing wrong with certain types of porn-it’s not that sex in general is dirty or dangerous, it’s what kind of sex and with who that connects it to dangerous people.

Ma Bell and Porn?

During part 5 of the American Porn series put up on ublearns the was an interview with Cardinal William Keeler of the Baltimore Archdiocese where he commented on their efforts to get At&T to stop allow porn to be viewed and bought through their cable. He said “Ma Bell shouldn’t be selling smut…” and “when a company like AT&T, that has won the herats and allegiance of so many people gets into this business, it’s a way of legitimating it, saying it’s ok, it’s alright…”

First of all Ma Bell is gone. AT&T is a different company from Bell Atlantic and can run their business how they so choose. Second Porn IS a legitimate business, whether you agree with it or not. It provides a product that there is definately a market for. It would not be here still and growing if there were nno consumers for it’s products. Having something be legitimate and having something that you personally agree with are not one in the same. Alcohol and cigarettes are sometimes deadly, home-wrecking, addictive products yet the Archdiocese does not start campaigns against Jack Daniels, Why?

sex-positive communities

After reading a blog from hotchic on “what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas” i went to the website she listed, which is www.sexuality.org I found it interesting to say the least. Hotchic went there after searching for which counties allow legal prostitution. This websit has alot of information on what is called “sex-positive communities” these communities are clubs, groups that may have their own buldings or may rent them out for parties or gatherings. At these events couple may engage openly in sex with each other and other (swinging) some clubs allow singles to be brought as guests so 3-somes or watching is allowed. I’m not going to judge the acts themselves. I would like to raise the question of whether bringing others into the bedroom or swapping partners yields a positive outcome. I think that whatever two people mutually agree on is their business and I have some friends who engage in very intriguing “extra-curricular” activities but often it seems these same couples also deal with jealousy later on, or there may have been alcohol involved. I just wonder how many people that are in these sex-positive clubs have been together for a really long time and have truly happy relationships, and sometimes marriages, outside of their visits.

human trafficking

In response to Eric’s post on human trafficking, I was also a little surprised at the amount that goes on, especially in the U.S. I saw an episode of Big Idea with Donny Deutsch a few weeks ago and his guest was a woman in her early 20′s who had been brought to the U.S. through an American Minister who was in her home country fo Thailand as a missionary. He brought her to live with him and his family and said she could attend school and work at their church. Her family sent her for a better life. When she got to the U.S. she was raped by the missionary weekly and he prostited her to other men. The show then looked into “outdoor brothels” near the Mexican boder where women slept and were made to perform sexual acts in man made huts and clearings in the woods.

I wonder how much the U.S. really knows or cares and how often they turn their heads because the problem is too big to fix, or possibly because there may be someone important or in powere bwho is reaping the benefits of trafficking, it is said to be a lucrative business.

The growing DIY trend

When I read in the Coopersmith article that in 1991 that DIY porn constitued over 30% of the industries revenues I was a little shocked. The more I think about it the less shocked I am but now wonder what percentage DIY contributes now. I also wonder if some porn industy professionals are feeling a little “pushed out” and finding less work due to this growing trend. I believe that people will always be willing to spend money to view professionally made fims with beautiful actors/actresses in them. At the same time-with all the free porn now available, will less films be bought? I have a friend who subscribes to the playboy channel and alot of the programming consists of DIY “soft-core” porn. These are men and women who are certainly not attractive enough to be in a magazine modelling for playboy but can now be a part of the empire by sending in their DIY short films.

Is religion to blame?

In response to Cyblog’s post where the question of whether religion is to blame for the shame that is associated with pornography, I whole-heartidly agree. I know I am about to get myself in serious hot water for saying this but I strongly feel that certain religions play a much bigger part in this than others.( I won’t name names, you know who you are) There are certain protistant doctrines that have more open vies on co-habitation before marriage, children out of wedlock, divorce and other topics that are certainly not as taboo as porn but if these religious groups condone such things that others do not then one would have to think that porn would be more accepted in certain religons and not others. I think anywhere that certain topics are shunned in such a manner where people feel that they cannot even talk about it, is a breeding ground for secrets and lies-curiosity did kill the cat, right?
